Cyclones Garner All-Conference Honors

Trevor Krizenesky (2nd year - Brillion HS) was named 1st team all-conference for the second straight season.  He averaged 16.5 ppg during WCC-East play including scoring 29 points and 32 points in the Cyclones last two regular season wins over UW-Manitowoc and UW-Washington.  He also recorded 60 assists (2nd in the conference), 30 steals (3rd in the conference), grabbed 52 rebounds, shot 23/64 (36%) from 3-point range, and 29/36 (80.5%) from the free-throw line in 12 WCC East games.

Cameron Schaefer (2nd year - Sheboygan North HS) was named 2nd team all-conference.  Schaefer was in double figures in 7 of 12 WCC East games.  He averaged 10.6 ppg, grabbed 60 rebounds (5 rpg), had 57 assists (3rd in the conference), and 32 steals (2nd in the conference).  Schaefer was also the Cyclones leading scorer in their WCC Tournament Championship victory over UW-Richland.

Jon Schlaver (2nd year - Fox Valley Lutheran HS) was named Honorable Mention all-conference.  The 6-8 center appeared in 9 conference games, missing 3 because of a concussion suffered on January 29th when the Cyclones hosted UW-Sheboygan.  He averaged 10.3 ppg, 5.4 rpg, and shot 54% (42/78) in those 9 games.  His 9 game stats are slightly misleading because he played sparingly in the teams last regular season game, his first game action after being out with the concussion.  In the Cyclones WCC tournament quarterfinal win over UW-Waukesha Schlaver scored 16 points on 8/9 shooting, and pulled down 7 rebounds.  His presence in the middle, and his ability to score, was a big reason for the Cyclones two year record of 47-7.

Lee Rabas (5th season) was named WCC East Co-Coach of the year.  It was the 5th straight year he has been awarded that honor.  The Cyclones are 52-8 in WCC East play during his time at UW-Fox, and have won WCC East regular season conference titles in 2011, 2012, and 2013.  They finished second in 2010 and 2014, and were the only team to beat that year's champ in conference play.  The Cyclones have also won WCC Tournament Championships in 2011, 2013, and 2014.   In Rabas' 5 years at the helm the UW-Fox men's basketball team has an overall record of 117-17.

UW-Fox Earns 2014 WCC Tournament Title

2014 WCC Tournament Championship Game

The UW-Fox men’s basketball team captured the 2014 Wisconsin Collegiate Conference tournament championship with an 84-59 victory over UW-Richland at JustAGame Fieldhouse in Wisconsin Dells.  It is the third tournament title in the past four years for the Cyclone men who earned the crown in 2011 and 2013.

Sunday’s game was closer than the score would indicate and the Roadrunners, who became the hot team in the WCC-West over the last few weeks, came to play.  The Cyclones struggled offensively in the first half, but played enough defense to lead 39-28.  Richland guard Grant Dull continued his torrid offensive play with 11 first half points, while UW-Fox first year big Nick Mohl had a career high 12 points in the opening period.  Mohl turned all four of his offensive rebounds into baskets.

UW-Fox maintained a double digit lead for most of the second half, but every time they seemed poised to pull away UW-Richland was up for the task.  Chase Hawley scored on a driving lay-up with just over 10 minutes remaining in the game then turned a steal on the next possession into an assist to Cameron Schaefer for a lay-up that put the Cyclones up 52-37, but back to back baskets had Richland back in the game at 52-42.

Richland had come back to win their first two tournament games from 16 and 18 down in the second half, but the Cyclones would not let that happen in the this game.  Trevor Krizenesky’s three-point field goal with just over 5 minutes remaining, off a great screen from Hawley and an assist from Nate TeGrootenhuis, pushed the UW-Fox lead to 67-50. 

From there the Cyclones would finish with a flurry.  Schaefer’s lay-up in transition with 2:06 left capped off a 10-2 run that would push the lead to 77-52.  UW-Fox also converted 22/24 (91.7%) free-throws for the game.

Schaefer led UW-Fox with 17 points, while Mohl finished with 14 points on 6/7 shooting, and 10 rebounds.  Matt Lehner, whose play offensively was huge for the Cyclones over the last few weeks, hit all 11 of his free-throw attempts to finish with 13 points.  Krizenesky finished off his stellar Cyclone career with 13 points and 4 assists and Jon Schlaver also capped off a fine career with 8 points and 7 rebounds. 

For their two day efforts Krizenesky and Mohl were named to the all-tournament team.  They joined George Johnson, UW-Richland;  Murdock Smith, UW-Barron;  and Devonte Pinckney, UW-Manitowoc on the five member team.

UW-Fox finishes the season 24-4 overall.  The Cyclones have posted a 117-17 record over the past 5 seasons.

(WCC Tournament Semi-Final)

Saturday’s game was the third match-up of the season between the Cyclones and Chargers.  The Cyclones had won the previous two contests by 9 and 17.  Beating a good team 3 times in one season is hard to do, but the Cyclones were up to the task on Saturday at JustAGame Fieldhouse in Wisconsin Dells.

The Cyclones got contributions from 7 players in the opening half, and headed to the lockerroom with a 34-29 lead.  UW-Fox struggled on offense in the opening half, but held the Chargers to 1/13 shooting from three-point range.

In the second half UW-Fox got key contributions from two of their first year players in earning the victory.  Guard Chase Hawley knocked down 2 three-point field goal attempts, and post player Nick Mohl scored 8 points.  Hawley’s last 3 with just under 6 minutes remaining put momentum back in the hands of the Cyclones.

Trevor Krizenesky led the Cyclones with 17 points and 5 assists, while Mohl added 10 rebounds to go with his 8 points.  Marcus Jensen also contributed 7 rebounds and 7 points for UW-Fox, which got 5 or more points from nine different players.

With the win UW-Fox moves to 23-4 overall on the season, and they earn a spot in the WCC Tournament Championship game for the 4th time in 5 seasons under head coach Lee Rabas.  They will play UW-Richland, 98-93 winners over UW-Manitowoc in the other semi-final on Saturday, at 2pm on Sunday at JustAGame Fieldhouse in Wisconsin Dells.

UW-Richland was the only road team to pick up a victory in WCC tournament quarter-final action on Wednesday night.  The Roadrunners clawed back from an 18 point 2nd half deficit to force overtime and earn the victory.

The four remaining teams will travel to Wisconsin Dells on Saturday February 22nd for semi-final games, which will be played at JustAGame Fieldhouse.  The tournament concludes with the championship game at 2pm on Sunday February 23rd at JustAGame.

Cyclones Advance To WCC Tournament Semi-Final

The UW-Fox men’s basketball team got key contributions from Jon Schlaver (Fox Valley Lutheran HS) and Sam Schreiber (Appleton East HS) in posting a 71-48 WCC tournament victory over UW-Waukesha on Wednesday night at UW-Fox.  Schlaver scored 16 points on 8/9 shooting in his first extended action since suffering a concussion two weeks ago. 

Schreiber scored the first 6 Cyclone points on his way to a career night that saw him finish with 14 points, 6 rebounds, 5 assists, and 5 steals on 6/9 shooting with no turnovers.  He also guarded Cougars leading scorer Brandon St. George for a good portion of the game helping UW-Fox hold him to just 8 points.  

Trevor Krizenesky (Brillion HS) also chipped in with 13 points, 8 rebounds, 6 assists, and 4 steals in his final home game as a Cyclone.  His three-point field goal midway through the second half stopped a 5-0 Cougar run and helped push the lead back to 15 points. 

The Cyclones led from start to finish, and despite shooting 0/12 from three-point range, found themselves up 34-20 at the half.  UW-Fox was extremely efficient on offense in the second half connecting on 16/24 (66.7%) field goal attempts, and 8 of 11 (72%) free-throws.

UW-Fox moves to 22-4 overall on the season.  They will travel to Wisconsin Dells on Saturday February 22nd for the WCC tournament final four, which is being hosted at JustAGame Fieldhouse.  It is the Cyclones 5th trip to the tournament semi-finals in 5 years. Other WCC men’s teams posting victories tonight were UW-Manitowoc, UW-Barron, and UW-Richland.

Cyclones To Host UW-Waukesha

The UW-Fox men's basketball team will host the UW-Waukesha Cougars on Wednesday night February 19th at 7pm.  It is a quarterfinal match-up in the 2014 Wisconsin Collegiate Conference tournament.

The Cougars (12-10, 6-6) and Cyclones (21-4, 10-2) split during the regular season.  UW-Fox beat the Cougars on November 15, 2013 at home 89-81.  UW-Waukesha returned the favor on January 27th when they defeated the visiting Cyclones 70-63.

The Cougars are led by first year head coach Adam Ligocki who was a stand out performer for the men's basketball team at then Carroll College from 2003-2007.  UW-Fox head coach Lee Rabas was an assistant coach at Lawrence University from 2004-2009.  Lawrence and Carroll were two of the top performing Midwest Conference (NCAA Division III) men's basketball programs during that time.

Cyclones Roll In Tournament Opener

The UW-Fox men’s basketball team jumped out to a 46-21 halftime lead on their way to an 87-50 win over visiting UW-Fond du Lac.  It was a first round game in the 2014 Wisconsin Collegiate Conference (WCC) tournament.   

Trevor Krizenesky and Riley Van Asten had late first half baskets to give the Cyclones momentum going into the half.  Krizenesky scored on a runner down the left baseline, and Van Asten converted a steal into a lay-up as the half ended.  

Krizenesky and Cameron Schaefer paced UW-Fox in the opening half.  Both were in double figures and combined to go 6/10 from three-point range.  Matt Lehner, Wesley Krauss, and Marcus Jensen were also part of a 14-4 run that helped the Cyclones to a 38-18 lead with 3:05 remaining in the half.  UW-Fox held the Falcons to 29% (8/27) field goal shooting in the opening half, just 2/12 (17%) on three-point field goals.

In the second half UW-Fox was able to push the lead and maintain it over 30 points throughout.  13 Cyclones scored led by Krizenesky and Schaefer who had 20 and 19 points respectively as well as 5 assists each.  Lehner rounded out the double digit scorers with 11 points.  Jensen pulled down 8 rebounds, 5 offensive, to lead UW-Fox, while Van Asten and Chase Hawley each had 3 steals.

The win boosts the Cyclones overall record to 21-4.  UW-Fox will host a WCC tournament quarterfinal game on Wednesday February 19th at 7pm.  Their opponent will be UW-Waukesha or UW-Sheboygan.

Cyclones Outlast UW-Washington

In a game that saw big point swings the Cyclones were able to make shots at the end of the game when they needed them.  Trevor Krizenesky’s sixth 3-point field goal of the night came from the left corner with 1:41 remaining in the game to push UW-Fox out to a 5 point lead.  From there the Cyclones were able to make free-throws to seal the win.

UW-Fox jumped out to a 17-2 lead to start the game.  However, a Cyclone defensive breakdown led to an old-fashioned three point play by Jon Lardy, which made the score 17-5 and seemed to settle the host Wildcats down.  From their UW-Washington would pull themselves back into the game and trail just 32-34 at the half.

Things didn’t get better for the Cyclones to start the second half.  Poor shooting, lapses on defense, and the play of Huskies first year player Evan Rathke led to a 34-42 deficit early in the second half.  

Trailing 45-51 with 10:24 remaining Krizenesky started to take over.  He would knock down 3 three-point field goals over the next several possessions, the last one, with just under 6 minutes to play, would give the Cyclones a 58-57 lead.

Matt Lehner, Chase Hawley, and Cameron Schaefer would also come up big down the stretch for UW-Fox.  Lehner knocked down two mid range jump shots in the last 5 minutes of the game to keep the Cyclones in the lead, while a cutting Schafer would score off a nifty pass from Hawley who himself would score on a reverse lay-up a minute later.  

Krizenesky finished with a career high 32 points, while Lehner chipped in with 11.  Schafer added 8 points, and Hawley 4 assists to lead UW-Fox.

UW-Fox finishes the season 20-4 overall, 10-2 in the WCC-East.  It is the fifth consecutive 20 win regular season, and 10 win WCC-East season for the Cyclones.  UW-Fox owns a 52-8 conference record over the past 5 seasons.

The Cyclones open WCC tournament play on Saturday February 15th when they host UW-Fond du Lac in a first round game.  Tip-off is set for 1pm at UW-Fox.

UW-Fox Wins On Sophomore Night

The Cyclones honored 10 second year players before the game, the final regular season home game for UW-Fox.  13 players scored for UW-Fox led by Trevor Krizenesky and Matt Lehner.  Both players finished with 15 points.  Krizenesky also added 4 assists.

UW-Fox led 30-21 at intermission and slowly pulled away in the second half.  Chase Hawley penetrated and found Krizenesky open for a three-point field goal that pushed the lead to 50-30 with just over 7 minutes to play.  Wesley Krauss scored 5 points during the decisive run.

The Cyclones defense held the Buccaneers to 27.6% field goal shooting for the game.  UW-Fox connected on 45% of their shots in the second half.

With the win UW-Fox moves to 19-4 overall, 9-2 in the WCC-East.  They travel to UW-Washington on Monday night February 10th for their regular season finally against the Wildcats.  Tip-off is scheduled for 7pm. 

Cyclones Get Key Road Victory

The UW-Fox Men’s Basketball team avenged an earlier season loss with a 72-63 road win over UW-Manitowoc.  The Blue Devils (17-4, 11-1) had wrapped up the WCC-East title on Monday night, which ended the Cyclones 3 year hold on the regular season conference crown.  However, with the win the Cyclones secure second place and move to 18-4 overall, 8-2 in the WCC-East.

Trevor Krizenesky scored 29 points to lead the Cyclones, while Cameron Schaefer chipped in with 12 points.  The two combined to shoot 15/26 for the game.  Marcus Jensen also scored 8 points and Nick Mohl grabbed 8 rebounds for UW-Fox.

Krizenesky scored 5 straight points to close out the first half and help the Cyclones to a 32-26 halftime lead.  UW-Manitowoc has been a big second half team this season, but the Cyclones picked up where they left off and pushed the lead to 45-30 on a Krizenesky drive with 13:41 remaining.

The Blue Devils cut the lead to single digits on several different occasions, but each time UW-Fox was up to the challenge.  The Cyclones hit 10 of their 14 free-throws in the second half to seal the victory.

UW-Fox wraps up their home schedule this Friday February 7th when they host UW-Marinette at 7:30pm.  The Cyclone men’s basketball program will say good-bye to 10 fabulous second year players.  UW-Fox closes out the regular season with a WCC-East road game at UW-Washington on Monday February 10th.

UW-Fox Downs Falcons

The Cyclones used a big second half to beat UW-Fond du Lac in the the WCC-East game.  UW-Fox led 25-18 at halftime after shooting a dismal 31% in the opening period.  The Cyclones held the Falcons to just 32% shooting in the first half and gave up only 1 offensive rebound to make up for their struggles on offense.

In the second half UW-Fox slowly built their lead and pulled away.  The Cyclones shot better in the second half, connecting on 16/35 field goal attempts (46%), while also being peskier on defense.  UW-Fond du Lac shot just 26% for the game, 22% from three-point range.  UW-Fox also held the Falcons to just 3 offensive rebounds in the contest.

Marcus Jensen topped his 15 point career high effort from two days earlier by leading the Cyclones with 17 points.  He also pulled down 7 rebounds.  Nick Mohl, starting in place of the injured Jon Schlaver, scored 10 points and grabbed 7 rebounds for UW-Fox.  

The Cyclone starting guard tandem of Trevor Krizenesky and Cameron Schaefer had unique stat lines.  The 5-10 Schaefer scored 9 points and grabbed 10 rebounds, while the 5-9 Krizenesky had 7 points and 9 rebounds.  Schaefer also handed out 5 assists.  Seth Wallace chipped in with 7 points off the bench for UW-Fox.

The win moves UW-Fox to 17-4 overall, 7-2 in the WCC-East.  They travel to UW-Manitowoc on Wednesday night February 5th for a WCC-East showdown with the Blue Devils.  Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30pm.  

Cylcones Beat Huskies

The Cyclones shook off their recent offensive woes by shooting 56% overall and 39% from three-point range in earning the non-conference win.  UW-Fox got off to their fastest start of the season bolting out to a 10-0 lead led by Trevor Krizenesky who drilled two quick three-point field goals to start the game.

UW-Fox made 20 of their 30 first half field goals (66.7%), including 7/11 (64%) from three-point range, to jump out to a 49-33 halftime lead.  The Cyclones defense held the Huskies to just 8 offensive rebounds, after giving up 24 to them earlier in the season.

Krizenesky led the Cyclones with 20 points, 7 assists, and 4 steals.  The second year guard connected on 9 of his 12 field goal attempts.  Marcus Jensen also added a career high 15 points on 6/7 shooting for UW-Fox, while forward Sam Schreiber recorded his first career double double with 10 points and 11 rebounds.  

For the second game in a row Cyclone first year guard Riley Van Asten provided a spark off the bench with 9 points and several hustle plays.  Cameron Schaefer also chipped in with 9 points and 5 assists to aid in the UW-Fox victory.

The Cyclones move to 16-4 overall.  They will return to action on Monday night February 3rd when they host UW-Fond du Lac for a 7:30pm tip-off.
